Banksy The Bear And The Bee - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog
Banksy The Bear And The Bee - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog The anonymous british street artist Banksy made a hilarious piece on the side of a trash container in Notting Hill, that is highly relevant to happiness at work. The text is a parody of a La Fontaine fable and goes like this: Once upon a time there was a bear and a bee who lived in a wood and were the best of friends. All summer long the bee collected nectar from morning to night while the bear lay on his back basking in the long grass. When Winter came the Bear realised he had nothing to eat and thought to himself I hope that busy little Bee will share some of his honey with me. But the Bee was nowhere to be found he had died of a stress induced coronary disease. Theres a larger picture of it here. Thanks for visiting my blog. The Modern Rules of Interviewing A New Paradigm
The Modern Rules of Interviewing A New Paradigm One of the most important aspects of any business is the process by which it selects and recruits potential employees. Why is it, then, that so many are still relying on outdated interview methods in todayâs modern age of globalization and competitiveness? Some hiring techniques obviously lend themselves more to certain industries, but as any recruitment specialist will tell you, techniques that reflect the values of the business go a lot further when attempting to find the right candidate. Why is this important? Because hiring the right recruit from the outset makes good economic sense, pure and simple. In this article, weâll attempt to discuss some of the modern rules of interviewing and how recruiters can maximize the results of their efforts. Psychometric Tests This type of testing can provide recruiters with objective data on subjective measurements that relate to reasoning, aptitude, personality and motivation. They are designed to gauge a personâs response to different hypothetical scenarios and how they would act under such circumstances. Advice: This doesnât mean you have to bring in a couch for your potential recruit to lay down on to discuss their feelings and lifeâs decisions. It just means that you begin to understand their needs to figure out if they would be happy and comfortable taking on the role. Behavioral Based Interviewing Also known as competency-based interviews, the goal here is to explore the capabilities of the interviewee. These have much to do with problem-solving, and like psychometric testing techniques, are designed to test certain skills. The difference is that in this case, the interviewer would generally ask direct questions of the candidate. If you asked the question, âTell me about the last time you failedâ â" a confronting question to be sure â" youâll quickly find out if youâre about to hire a good fit, or a bad apple. Advice: Take the time to prepare your questions. If you come off unprepared, you cannot expect your interviewee to respond properly. Donât forget that seemingly random questions can be a great way to relieve the tension that is inherently present within most interview rooms. Group Interviews Group interviews are perhaps the most dreaded and intimidating interview technique of all time and are every candidateâs worst nightmare. However, as employment typically involves a team of people working together in the same environment, this can be one of the more effective methods of hiring. Advice: If you consider going down this route in order to save time, remember that you can still make it fun. This has everything to do with perception â" if you conduct a boring interview, your potential employees will believe the company is boring and be less inclined to participate to their full extent. Personality Tests It can be said that matching the right personality to the right job role is one of the easiest things to do on paper but the hardest thing to do in reality. It is something that only comes with time, and youâll most likely end up basing your decision in accordance to first impressions. Advice: People often present a mask when meeting a person for the first time, and as such it can be difficult to establish trust. Personality tests can be a good tool to see if the potential candidateâs true personality is a fit for the position. Just remember to remind the candidate to answer honestly and that there are no right or wrong answers. Digital Presentations As more and more companies go global and begin assembling teams of contractors working from home â" an arrangement that seems to suit many modern employees â" recruiters are finding that oneâs work will speak for itself. Advice: Digital interview techniques such as online trials and take-home assignments, in tandem with Skype conversations, are becoming increasingly prevalent. Extending an offer of employment based heavily on a personâs ability to conduct themselves in a real-world scenario can be one of the best ways to truly gauge their fit. The point is, there are so many new and interesting ways for interviews to be carried out in todayâs fast-paced and technologically connected world. The next time youâre face to face with a potential employee, give some thought as to how you can restructure and reorganize the rules of established interviewing techniques to better suit your needs.

Why You Didnt Get the Job
Why You Didnt Get the JobIf youre on the job hunt, you wantto ensure youdont make mistakes that keep youfrom finding work, especially after spending a lot of time on job search sites. Although most people know it is a bad idea to cancel an bewerberbewerberinterview at the last moment or wear a running suit to an interview, smaller mistakes can also keep a job seeker from being considered. googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1467144145037-0) ) 1. leid Proofreading a ResumeResumes tell a recruiter a lot about a job applicant after just one glance. A resume that is messy and contains poorgrammar or typos will notbe taken seriously by a recruiter. You can fix problems with your resume by using an online grammar checker and rereading it carefully to look for mistakes. If you have a friend who is good with grammar and punctuation, ask him or herto look it over for you. Whatever it takes, make your resume as perfect as you can.2. Not Focusing Your ResumeAre you are o ne of those job seekerswho wrote a resume a year ago and are recycling it to apply for jobs? The days of using a general resume are over. Because hiring managers are busy people, they want to interview the best candidates for the job and not waste time on applicants whose qualifications arent a good fit. Rewriting your resume to include your qualifications that fit in with the job description can get you that interview.3. Not Writing a Cover LetterHiring managers go to the cover letter first before looking at an applicants resume. Even when applying for a position by sending your resume via email, you really need to include a cover letter. Many hiring managers wont consider an application without one. Remember to include the reason you want the job in your cover letter, and dont make it a mini copy of your resume.4. Going Into an Interview ColdLets say youve been invited for a job interview, so youre feeling pretty confident at this point. Overconfidence and lack of preparation when being interviewed has cost more than one individual a job offer. Job interviews normally consist of knowing about the company where you are applying, asking questions that are relevant, telling the recruiter why you are qualified and how you can be an asset in the job, and following up afterward.5. Casting Too Wide a NetOne mistake some job seekers make is not focusing on the job type and instead zeroing in on a specific company.Think about opportunities, not one particular job, and you can find yourself employed faster. Maybe you have your heart set on a job with the Widget Company, but you would have to start at the bottom and work your way up because there are no openings for someone with your qualifications. Focus clearly on the position you want to fill, and expend your efforts in that direction.6. Not Minding the TimeTime matters when it comes to hiring managers. Showing up late for an interview reflects badly, as does showing up too early because it can make you appear anxio us and make the interviewer feel pressured. Do leave early to get to your interview about 10 minutes before it is scheduled, but find a spot to relax if you arrive before that.7. Getting Too PersonalMaking a personal connection with a hiring manager can be a good idea, such as sharing an interest in a sportsteam or favorite restaurants in yourcity. However, going overboard and supplying too many details about your personal life takes up the hiring managers time and may not reflect well on you. Rambling on, whether in a resume or during an interview, can leave a bad impression. If you do relate personal information, keep it in context with the job. After spending time searching classified job ads and sending in a resume, common mistakes can often cost youa job. Just as knowing how to be a successful job applicant and sail through an interview is valuable information, so is knowing how to conduct a practical job search. Resume Objective Examples
Resume Objective Examples Entry-level resume objective examples are outdateduse a career summary insteadA career summary is mora practical than a resume objective. Trends are common in fashion, music, food, and, yes, even resumes. Case in point Resume objectives are no longer considered requirements for resumesthecareer summaryis far more common nowadays and is critical to include when youre applying forentry-level jobs. There are some similarities between the two, which well talk about, but the ultimate goal of both is to quickly pitch yourself to a hiring manager.Historically, entry-level objectives explained to a hiring manager what your ultimate goal was in your job search. Therefore, it was especially necessary to include resume objectives when job seekers were changing industries or targeting specific jobs or positions. (Entry-level job seekers would include a resume objective, regardless.)A career summary, however, is more practical in that it tells a hiring mana ger about your professional qualifications and background. This can be especially difficult to write because you likely dont have loads of work experience, but you do want to solidify the fact that you know the type of career youre looking for and the value youd bring to a company.A good entry-level resume objective was practical and straight to the point, and so too is a good career summary. So, in reality, its less about you and more about them. (A resume objective was the opposite.)To write an effective career summary, you need to research the company to which youre applying and include specific language that references their mission and/or the position itself.
